The letter from Frits Schouten, of Waiuku, has a fundamental flaw. The Government has set out a review of the Residential Tenancies Act and one of the points raised was regulation of the industry. How that regulation is implemented will affect all landlords, regardless of how good a job they do and whether they are members of any recognised landlording association.
We either have a say in these changes through a recognised industry body such as the New Zealand Property Investors Federation, to which the Auckland Property Investors Association is affiliated, or the Government takes over.
So the choice is either we govern our own industry or the Government does it for us. We would rather have some input through consultation than have the Government legislate to our disadvantage.
